11 Facts About Me:

  1. I have lived in Pennsylvania, Arkansas, Virginia, Georgia, Hawaii, Kansas, and New York. I like Virginia the best.
  2. One summer I worked in a light bulb factory. It was loud, boring and scary when the machines broke. I was a college student, not a mechanic.
  3. I have four daughters, four dogs, and two cats.
  4. My husband deployed for the Gulf War four days after we were married. We have been married for almost 24 years.
  5. I spent four months in Glasgow, Scotland where I completed my student teaching. It was one of the best experiences of my life.
  6. Zombie books, movies, and The Walking Dead are strangely fascinating to me. I enjoy thinking about post-apocalyptic scenarios.
  7. IMG_0362In his 24 years with the U.S. Army, my husband has deployed to combat zones five times.
  8. Musicals are the best. My favorites are Newsies, The Sound of Music and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.
  9. On the weekends I volunteer with a dog rescue organization. Finding new homes for abused or abandoned dogs is rewarding as is matching up families with the perfect dog.
  10. Potty humor cracks me up. I grew up with three brothers and am still recovering. Spending all day with middle school students doesn’t help!
  11. I am a super picky eater. I don’t eat vegetables, fruit, most candy or any white meat…and lots of other things.

NOMINEES FROM amforte66:

  1. Why do you blog? I am a Creative Writing and Newspaper Journalism teacher, but I don’t write very much myself. My daughter challenged me this year to start writing…so here I am!
  2. What is your favorite thing to write about and why? I enjoy writing about life, my observations, and things that inspire me.
  3. Who is your biggest inspiration and why? My oldest daughter, Marissa. I actually wrote a post on how she inspires me. Check it out here:
  4. What would you change about the world? I would end the exploitation and abuse of women and children throughout the world.
  5. What is the first thing you think about when you wake up? First I check the status of my head to see if I have a migraine since this is an issue for me. Then…I think about what I have to look forward to in the coming day!
  6. Where do you see yourself in ten years? Well, I might be a grandmama. I hope that my husband and I will be seasoned world travelers by that point as we will be free from our child rearing and college paying duties.
  7. How many times do you worry a day and what is your biggest one? I live by the Serenity Prayer so I’m not a big worrier.
  8. What makes you happy? Steaming hot English Breakfast tea, new Apple products, books that I just can’t put down, napping on the beach, riding my bike, laughing with my whole family at Thanksgiving, sweet notes from my students, a purring cat sleeping on my back, adoring looks from my dogs who think I’m the most amazing human on the earth, the first day and the last day of school…and the list could go on and on!
  9. tigerpaws-jnr-mohitosMake up the first few lines of the story of how we might meet.

Me: Excuse me, but do you think a bar is an appropriate place to bring your cute little Tiger? And is he old enough to drink?

You: Well, he’s older than he looks and we’ve been walking a lot today, visiting the White House, the Washington Monument and whatnot. He’s really thirsty.

Me: Umm…I don’t know where you’re from, but we have rules here in the United States. I really hate to see a tiger being exploited in this way.

You: Crikey! I think you’ve got the wrong idea here. Let’s start over…

10. Do you like our blog at Tiger Paws? I love the Tiger Paws blog because it is so positive. The photography is amazing and inspires me to learn more about my camera so that maybe someday I can take awesome pictures too.

11.IMG_1528 What does your list of the day include and will you finish it? My list is below and I will probably finish all of it except for the camera part. My camera book is kind of boring. I really need to sign up for some hands-on courses.

    1. Hang out with my husband and talk
    2. Volunteer at Lost Dog and Cat Rescue with my youngest daughter
    3. Ride my bike

  1. Thanks for nominating me! 🙂 I love zombie movies and The Walking Dead, too. I think you’re a cool teacher and a great mom.:) Keep blogging coz your posts inspire me!

      • Yes, very! We all went to Yosemite last summer for a big family reunion, only 2 grandchildren couldn’t make it, and we were 50 people! We keep in touch by the internet because now we are all spread all over the world, it’s wild! How about you and your family?

      • Yes, we are all still very close. We get together once a year for a reunion at Dewey Beach, Delaware. A whole week together at the beach with grandparents, cousins playing, and catching up with my parents as well as my brothers and their wives is heaven!

  2. I enjoyed reading this 🙂 You’re the opposite of me with the gender of your siblings/kids- I grew up with 4 sisters and now have 3 boys (and 1 girl). I still don’t get potty humor and boys generally mystify me 🙂 I always say I don’t envy much, but sometimes I look at mothers with sweet, quiet girls and feel a little twinge…

  3. Thank you for nominating me! I look forward to answering the questions and passing on the honor to other newbies like us! I enjoyed learning more about you and we have a few things in common; I am also an introvert, love to read, have three daughters and was an elementary school teacher (fifth grade) before retiring. 🙂 I don’t often read post-apolytic novels but loved The Hunger Games trilogy and Ship Breaker. Keep publishing posts, you are a natural!

  4. Holy moly you lived in so many places I’m so jealous haha. One of my dreams will be to go on this American road trip where I visit all 50 states of America! Love your blog by the way. It has a nice soothing blend to it. Especially love the title of your blog. Continue to entertain me in the times to come!

    Take care!

    • Well, if you are in Virginia, you will have to stop by for a tour of Washington, D.C.
I’m curious…the three paragraph intro that you are fond of. Is that a personal preference or is that how you were taught to write? I find it interesting because my students would stage a coup if I asked them to write write more than a few sentences for an intro. I like it! I’m just curious…

      • Haha, three is an optimum number for me. Like Roald Dahl, he uses his three-stage tactic to build suspense. For me though, I use a three para intro to introduce three perspectives on what I’m going to write and then link them out to make it easier to transition to my main content. It’s almost impossible for an intro to be just 1 paragraph, at least for me. It’s too little, feels too rushed haha. It’s the way I write tho. Your students need to listen to you more haha!

  5. I enjoyed reading your blog today! Congrats on the Award!
I’m a mother of 2 preschoolers, so was interested on your take about how technology affects learning.

    • I think a balanced approach is best. I think students have a much shorter attention span due to technology. They like to read short snippets of things rather than whole articles or even books. Many of my students would rather watch videos to learn about new ideas or skills than read about them. I notice that if my students can’t find the answer to something quickly, they become frustrated and often give up. Learning via technology is much more entertaining and engaging so that is a definite plus. If a student is interested in a topic, they will go to great lengths to educate themselves. Learning games for preschoolers are great as they love playing on iPads. This is much more entertaining than flashcards. However, as I said before, balance is key!! Nothing beats a book, a box of Crayola’s, a walk through the woods, writing a story with a pencil or watching a live performance. Thanks for commenting!!
